Lawn Irrigation System

Springtime is here and you should get to know the importance of the backflow prevention assembly on your lawn irrigation system.

What Is A Backflow Prevention Assembly?

A backflow prevention assembly is a device that allows water to flow in one direction but never in the opposite direction, when working properly. The sole purpose of the backflow device is to prevent drinking water from being contaminated due to backflow. The landscape around your home or business is filled with all sorts of things that can make you sick if ingested; fertilizers, pesticides, bacteria found in pet waste, just to name a few.

When Does Backflow Occur?

Backflow can occur if there is a sudden pressure drop in the municipal/city water line. This could be caused by the opening of a fire hydrant, broken pipes, a freeze, power outages, or other unexpected issues. When the pressure drops on the supply side of an irrigation system, water that is standing around a sprinkler head can be drawn back into the municipal water line, thus contaminating the potable water supply. Backflow prevention assemblies keep this from happening.

Do I Need To Have A Backflow Prevention Assembly Installed?

Because the potential risk for contamination is high, most cities require the installation of a backflow prevention device on all irrigation systems and require that they be tested upon installation and in most cases annually thereafter.

What Type Of Backflow Device Do I Need?

There are several types of backflow prevention devices. The type of device you are required to install is dictated by local codes. Before your lawn irrigation system starts it’s busy season, let a certified technician at Backflow Testing & Repair LLC make sure your backflow preventer is doing its job and working properly.
